Upcoming Event: A Start-up Story with Dean Loh
How To Make It In The Wild West of the Web Industry
Start a conversation with anyone you can find: the person sitting next to you in the coffeeshop, in a bar, or on the MRT (you can even talk to your colleague!). If the topic was on work, you will likely find out very quickly that the person had, at some point in his or her life, thought about striking it out on their own. “Becoming my own boss” is probably one of the most common dreams that people have.
But many people hold back the dream, because having the thought is one thing, quitting a steady-income job and taking the plunge is quite another! How is it like to take the plunge, and stay afloat in the wild waters? The best way to know is to speak to someone who has, and we have just the guy for you!
About Dean Loh
Dean Loh is the founder of Kaia Pte. Ltd., a web designer with close to 2 decades of experience in the field. Starting out as a junior web designer, Dean has worked his way up the corporate ladder with a variety of companies. His last job was with a Fortune 500 company, where he was tasked with 2-million dollar migration project.
Dean started off as a web designer 18 years ago, at the turn of the millenia in 2000. During this time, Netscape was the only other browser opposite Internet Explorer, and the world couldn’t decide which was better. As it was a newly-emerging technology, there weren’t many books or schools that taught web design. Hence, Google was Dean’s source of knowledge for many of his work-related challenges.
Since 2004, Dean started freelancing when working his full-time job. When the company shifted their operations to Shanghai in 2006, he was asked to move there. As he was already earning more on the side than his full-time job, it was a fairly easy decision for him to quit. Has it been an easy journey since? Find out from Dean on 23 August!
